Atoms: Revolutionising Automation in Food, Mining, and Transport
Atoms, the new venture from Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick, aims to advance robotics technology and systems for automating various tasks in the mining, transport, and food industries. The company represents an evolution of Kalanick’s previous venture, City Storage Systems, which is known for its ghost-kitchen platform, CloudKitchens.
Atoms’ Vision for the Future
The company’s vision outlines that specialised robots designed for specific applications can significantly enhance productivity across different sectors. Atoms dedicates its efforts primarily to three key areas:
Atoms Food
This division intends to create innovative technology and infrastructure catering to the food industry, facilitating enhanced automation in kitchens, food production processes, and delivery systems.
Atoms Mining
In this area, the focus will be on boosting productivity within mining operations through the development of robotic systems and automation tools tailored for the sector.
Atoms Transport
Atoms identifies this sector as a foundational “wheelbase for robots,” a mobility platform designed to support various robotic systems, as detailed in a comprehensive mission statement comprising 1,700 words on the company’s website.
Kalanick’s Journey and Vision
Kalanick expressed his deep disappointment upon departing from Uber in 2017 due to pressure from investors. He subsequently left the board in 2019.
Now, he envisions a return to his passion for developing atom-based computing and machines that employ AI technology to automate physical tasks in the real world. Additionally, it has been reported that Uber may play a significant role in supporting Kalanick’s Atoms.
Tackling Real-World Challenges
Kalanick also discusses his strategy for addressing real-world challenges by adopting the same method that engineers utilise for software development—creating structured systems capable of computing, processing, and performing tasks autonomously. During an episode of the TBPN podcast, Kalanick mentioned that Atoms has been in stealth mode for eight years and already employs thousands of individuals.
