Trump Optimistic About Anthropic’s Potential Reversal of Pentagon Blacklisting

US President Donald Trump expressed a positive outlook on Tuesday regarding Anthropic, indicating that the AI firm may soon manage to reverse its Pentagon blacklist status. This follows a directive issued by Trump in February, which necessitated government bodies to halt collaboration with Anthropic, branding it a supply-chain risk according to the Pentagon.

In March, Anthropic took formal action against this designation by launching a lawsuit against the Defence Department. To improve relations, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with officials from the White House on March 17. The White House described this encounter as productive and constructive.

Positive Talks in the White House

During a segment on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Trump stated that there had been beneficial discussions with Anthropic. He remarked that they are intelligent and may offer significant contributions. Trump noted that he prefers working with smart individuals and expressed confidence that a good relationship could be formed.

When questioned about the possibility of a deal with the Pentagon, Trump hinted that it is conceivable, emphasising the need for the brightest minds in technology.

Focus on Cybersecurity and AI Safety

Anthropic pointed out its earlier assertion regarding the meeting’s productive nature, which revolved around mutual interests in cybersecurity and AI safety. This offers a glimpse of potential reconciliation between Trump’s administration and Anthropic, amidst weeks of contention.

Introduction of Mythos

Recently, Anthropic unveiled Mythos, described as the most sophisticated AI tool available, designed to detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities. However, the Claude Mythos Preview will not be available to the public; instead, Anthropic has launched Project Glasswing, inviting key tech firms and cybersecurity companies to privately assess the model.

Co-founder Jack Clark shared that discussions with the Trump administration regarding Mythos are ongoing, although he did not provide further details. Despite Trump’s prior description of Anthropic as part of the radical left, the firm faced challenges with the administration after seeking guarantees from the Pentagon concerning the non-surveillance application of its AI solutions.

Pentagon’s Blacklisting Impact

The Pentagon’s prohibition has placed a six-month ban on the usage of Anthropic’s AI tools by Defence Department employees and contractors, with specific exemptions for national security purposes. Earlier this month, a federal appeals court in Washington, DC, reinforced the Pentagon’s decision to blacklist Anthropic, symbolising a victory for the Trump administration following a contrasting ruling in another legal dispute initiated by the company.
