Trump Mobile, the new wireless initiative supported by the Trump Organization, has recently faced criticism for subtly modifying crucial statements regarding its inaugural product — the T1 smartphone. Initially advertised as a device that is “proudly made in America,” the company has now changed its website to use more vague terminology concerning the phone’s origin, which has raised questions about its manufacturing claims.
The Trump Mobile website previously featured strong claims such as “MADE IN THE USA” and characterised the T1 as being “proudly made right here in the USA.” As of 25 June, these statements have been removed. The current webpage describes the T1 as having an “American-proud design” and asserts it is “brought to life right here in the USA,” stating that there are “American hands behind every device.” However, there is no longer any explicit mention of the phone being manufactured in the United States.
This change in language follows a statement by Eric Trump, son of US President Donald Trump, on Fox Business, where he claimed customers would receive phones “made right here in the United States of America” and operated “right out of St. Louis, Missouri.” During its launch on 16 June, the company also described the T1 as “proudly designed and built in the United States” within official press communications.
Despite the adjustments on the website, Trump Mobile stands by its initial messaging. Spokesperson Chris Walker indicated, “T1 phones are proudly being made in America,” and dismissed reports suggesting otherwise as “simply inaccurate.” The company has not provided a rationale for the modification of the wording on its website.
Moreover, additional inconsistencies concerning the T1 include various technical specifications that have also been subtly altered. The phone’s screen size has been diminished from the initially advertised 6.78 inches to 6.25 inches. The previous claims of 12GB of RAM have been completely removed, with no updated details regarding memory shared. Additionally, the device’s delivery timeline, which was originally slated for September, has now been vague, referred to simply as “later this year.”
Priced at $499 with a required deposit of $100, the T1 comes with the “47 Plan,” which offers mobile service for $47.45 per month that includes unlimited talk, text, data, and international calling to 100 countries. This figure references Donald Trump’s position as the 47th President of the United States.
Industry analysts have long raised doubts about the practicality of manufacturing smartphones domestically, pointing out that the US lacks the essential infrastructure and supply chains, which are predominantly located in Asia. Experts estimate that a truly American-made smartphone could cost over $3,000, significantly higher than the T1’s listed price.
Given the inconsistencies between marketing claims and updated product details, it remains uncertain to what degree the T1 can genuinely be classified as an American-made smartphone.
