Android 17 Features and Upgrades Unveiled Before I/O 2026

Android 17 introduces exciting updates and features in anticipation of I/O 2026. With AI-driven elements, this latest smartphone software showcases advancements like Gemini Intelligence, improved user interface, enhanced security measures, and much more.

Initially, Android 17 will be available on Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, followed by a rollout to other Android devices later this year. For Android smartphone users, here is a glimpse of what the new software update encompasses:

Android 17 Features and Improvements

Gemini Intelligence

Android 17 integrates a smarter upgrade known as Gemini Intelligence, which is supported by advanced AI models. This functionality enhances several features within Android 17, providing more autonomous and intelligent capabilities.

The AI component connects various Google applications and selected third-party services, facilitating users in booking, searching, scheduling, summarising, and organising information smoothly. Additional features leveraging Gemini Intelligence include Rambler, Create My Widget, and others.

Quick Share to AirDrop Transfers

Last year, Google rolled out a feature for the Google Pixel 10 series that enabled Quick Share to interface with Apple’s AirDrop, making file sharing simpler between Android and iOS devices. This capability was subsequently extended to the Google Pixel 9 series, the Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, and various older Galaxy models. Presently, Google is expanding this feature to other brands including Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor for enhanced Quick Share to AirDrop transfers.

Pause Point

Google has introduced a new feature aimed at curbing the doomscrolling trend prevalent on social media platforms like Instagram and, in select regions, TikTok. This feature allows users to designate certain apps, labelled as “distracting,” such as social media applications.

When attempting to access these apps, Android will not open them instantly. Instead, users will encounter a brief 10-second pause screen that offers suggestions for healthier alternatives, such as engaging in breathing exercises, setting a usage timer, browsing favourite photographs, or switching to a more calming option like an audiobook app.

Redesigned 3D Emojis

With the release of Android 17, Google has teased the introduction of revamped 3D emojis that appear more detailed, expressive, and visually appealing. Although the company displayed some samples, the complete collection of redesigned emojis has not yet been disclosed.

These new 3D emojis are expected to be rolled out to Google Pixel devices later this year, with plans for future availability on other Android smartphones.

Security and Scam Protection Enhancements in Android 17

Google is bolstering Android’s scam protection and security features with the rollout of Android 17. Among the updates is the introduction of anti-spoofing call protection through partnerships with designated banks, which allows Android devices to ascertain if a call is a scam or from a legitimate source. Suspicious calls might be flagged or even disconnected automatically.

The Live Threat Detection feature will also be improved, scanning apps for risky behaviours, including SMS forwarding, hidden background operations, and misuse of accessibility options.

The FindHub feature will receive a significant upgrade, introducing a “Mark as Lost” mode with enhanced security protocols. Should a phone be marked as lost, Android can lock the device using biometric verification in addition to a PIN or password. Consequently, even if someone is aware of the device’s passcode, they will not be able to gain full access without the required biometric authentication.
