X Users Experience Confusion Over Fake Video Link Removal News

On April 1, X, the microblogging platform created by Elon Musk, sparked widespread confusion when numerous users claimed that the platform had eliminated its video link copying feature. This action led to speculations, as users filled their timelines with memes and complaints, anxious about potential restrictions or sudden changes to the user interface.

User Reactions on X

On the platform, many individuals began to suggest that the feature’s removal was intentional, targeting specific types of content. Conversely, some users reported discrepancies, stating that they could still access the feature without issues on their devices.

Sample User Response

ARS, a user on X, noted that others were merely trying to gain engagement through misinformation, stating users could still copy video links as usual.

Truth Behind the Video Link Removal Claim

Eventually, X users received confirmation that the supposed removal of the video link feature was not legitimate. Reports later indicated that it was part of an April Fools’ prank, orchestrated to increase engagement among various accounts rather than to introduce a platform update. Multiple accounts capitalised on this prank, achieving significant visibility, with some posts generating millions of views.

How to Copy Video Links on X

The video link feature is operational as expected. Users can continue to click on the share button and opt for “Copy Link” to share any video. Additionally, the right-click functionality is also available for sharing across different platforms and applications.

Misinformation Spread

While this incident turned out to be a prank, it highlights the rapidity with which misinformation can circulate online and how swiftly individuals can confuse speculation for genuine platform changes.
