WhatsApp Introduces Automatic Message Translation Feature

WhatsApp has initiated testing for a new capability allowing users to automatically translate messages within chats and channels while ensuring data remains on-device to protect user privacy. This feature, identified in the latest beta version (v2.25.12.25) of WhatsApp for Android, operates offline with downloadable language packs, confirming that user information does not leave the device.

Details of the Translation Feature

As per the insights from feature tracker WABetaInfo, the translation option can be found under the ‘Chat lock’ settings, allowing configuration on a per-chat level. Once activated, users can select their desired language from an available list that includes Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian, followed by downloading the respective language pack. The translation process is executed locally, complementing WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption (E2EE) guidelines.

Development Timeline and Functionality

This translation feature has been under development since July 2024 and aims to facilitate smooth communication across various languages without the need for rerouting message content via Meta’s servers. Users have the flexibility to enable auto-translation for all messages within a chat or to manually translate specific messages by selecting a dedicated “Translate” option.

Settings and User Control

Initially, the Translate Messages feature is disabled and can be accessed through the app’s settings, allowing users to manage language pack selection and removal. Similar to WhatsApp’s recent voice note transcription feature, which also depends on downloadable language packs, all translations are performed directly on the user’s device.

WhatsApp’s Commitment to Privacy

This initiative appears to be part of WhatsApp’s overarching strategy to enhance AI-driven and multilingual communication tools while maintaining user privacy and control. Although available only to a limited number of beta testers at present, an extensive rollout may occur in the forthcoming weeks.
