WhatsApp Web Users Affected by New Cybersecurity Rules
The new cybersecurity regulations are impacting WhatsApp Web usage on desktops. The Indian Government’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a significant directive that mandates messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram to logout users automatically from desktop sessions every six hours.
New Regulation Details
This initiative derives from the Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules, 2025, aimed at addressing the escalating instances of cyber fraud and digital crime nationwide. Officials have indicated that the existing system, which permits accounts to stay logged in even after SIM cards are removed or deactivated, is being exploited by scammers, often allowing them to carry out deceitful activities from abroad.
Introduction of SIM Binding
In response, the DoT is instituting a stringent “SIM binding” requirement. This will compel messaging applications to verify continuously that the active SIM card is physically inserted in the user’s mobile phone. Should the SIM be removed or switched, the application will become non-operational.
Impact on WhatsApp Web Users
For those using WhatsApp Web or the desktop version, these changes mean a compulsory logout every six hours, without the option to bypass this requirement. Users must re-authenticate their sessions to resume messaging, typically by scanning a QR code using their mobile device. This measure ensures that the person accessing the desktop client is indeed the verified account holder in possession of the SIM card.
Concerns Within the Industry
While the government defends this regulation as crucial for protecting the telecom sector and improving criminal traceability, there are apprehensions among industry professionals and users. Critics argue that the new rule, which is set to be enforced within ninety days, could interfere with workplace productivity and create challenges for employees who depend on uninterrupted desktop communication during business hours.
