Netflix Discontinues Casting Feature

Netflix has discontinued the ability to cast content from its mobile app to most modern televisions and streaming devices, as initially reported by Android Authority.

Change in Casting Options

This alteration, recently observed by users, leads to the disappearance of the “Cast” button from the Netflix app when attempting to stream to these updated devices. As per the streaming service’s revised support pages, casting from a mobile device to most TV-streaming devices and smart TVs is no longer supported.

Clarification from Netflix

A representative stated that casting will generally not be feasible if a device comes with its own remote control. Netflix asserts that this decision aims to improve the overall customer experience, although many subscribers affected by this change express strong discontent regarding the loss of this helpful feature.

Impact on Subscription Tiers

This limitation spans all subscription tiers, including both ad-supported and ad-free plans.

Legacy Device Support

However, this change does not impact older devices. Users with legacy Chromecast models, which lack a remote, and televisions that have Google Cast built-in can still cast content. Yet, even on these older devices, casting is limited to non-ad-supported Netflix subscriptions. Users of Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, or most integrated Google TV smart TVs must now depend solely on the remote control of their respective devices to browse and view Netflix content.

Rolling Out Changes

This reduction in features is being gradually implemented; some users still report visibility of the casting option on their mobile devices. This may change in the near future.
