X Account Transparency Feature: Enhance Your Experience
X, which was previously known as Twitter, has begun the rollout of an innovative feature called ‘About this account,’ seamlessly incorporated into user profiles. This tool aims to assist users of the platform in identifying and countering various instances of inauthentic activity, such as misleading bots and more intricate, AI-enhanced manipulation. The introduction of this feature comes after a public commitment made by X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, who highlighted the challenges faced in distinguishing real users amid increasing platform manipulation and vowed to ensure greater transparency. By making important background data available, X intends to empower its community with the information necessary to assess an account’s legitimacy effortlessly.
Key Features of the ‘About this Account’ Panel
The panel showcases essential information relating to an account’s background and history. Accessibility now includes specifics such as the account’s original joining date, its primary location, a comprehensive record of any username changes, and the source from which application access was made. This information serves as clear evidence for users; for instance, if a profile claims it is located in a particular city within the UK, but the access history consistently indicates connections from abroad, users have substantial grounds to question the account’s authenticity and motives. Such inconsistencies are often vital signs of potentially harmful or misrepresentative accounts.
How to Access the Transparency Data
Gaining access to this data is simple. Users just need to click on the ‘Joined’ date displayed on any profile to see a detailed overview of the information. However, it is important to note that the feature’s initial launch is limited and will be rolled out gradually. While numerous users can currently view their own account details within the panel, this feature has not yet been made available universally on all other profiles across the platform.
Customisation and Privacy Settings
Additionally, X is offering users the ability to tailor their privacy settings, allowing them to select whether to display their specific country or a broader geographical area. This strategic move positions X as the latest social media platform to embrace this transparency model, following in the footsteps of competitors such as Instagram who have already taken similar initiatives.
