At MWC 2025, Xiaomi presented its Modular Optical System, a groundbreaking concept that incorporates a customisable external lens with a smartphone to achieve DSLR-quality imaging. A teaser demonstrated a modified Xiaomi 15 device that includes a MagSafe-like magnetic ring on its back, allowing users to attach a tailored camera module. The external lens works in harmony with the phone’s existing hardware, meaning that images captured with it can be edited and shared alongside regular smartphone photos.

Key Features of the Modular Optical System

The Xiaomi Modular Optical System is driven by the company’s advanced LaserLink technology, which facilitates almost immediate data transfer between the device and the external lens. This concept boasts a 100-megapixel Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor combined with a 35mm all-aspherical glass lens featuring a wide aperture, ensuring outstanding performance in low-light conditions.
