Zoho Halts Semiconductor Fab Plans in India
Zoho, the Indian software company, has decided to suspend its ambitions for establishing a semiconductor fab plant in India. Zoho’s co-founder, Sridhar Vembu, expressed the company’s concerns about technology credibility in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Zoho’s Semiconductor Investment Plans
Zoho had intended to invest $700 million into chip manufacturing and had also taken steps to hire personnel and create a board for supervising the fab initiatives. However, this plan is now on hold.
Concerns Over Technology Confidence
Vembu mentioned that the semiconductor business is extremely capital intensive and necessitates government support. The firm aimed to ensure a clear technological direction before seeking public funds. Due to the lack of confidence in the current technology, the board made the decision to pause the project until a more feasible tech strategy is identified.
Related Developments in the Semiconductor Industry
Recently, it was reported by Reuters that Gautam Adani’s group has also halted negotiations with Israel’s Tower Semiconductor regarding its $10 billion chip initiative after an internal assessment.
Approved Projects and Job Creation
The Karnataka government had previously given the green light for Zoho’s $400 million facility in the Mysuru area, which was set to create 460 jobs and would have marked the first project of its kind in the state.
Future of Zoho’s Semiconductor Ambitions
While Vembu indicated that the current proposal has been shelved, there has been no indication about a future schedule for resuming Zoho’s semiconductor plans. Established in 1996, Zoho provides subscription-based software and services to businesses in 150 countries, employing over 18,000 individuals and serving more than 120 million users.
