Gates’ Dinner Guests: A Selection of Influential Figures
In his podcast ‘Figuring Out’, Raj Shamani prompted Gates to select three Indians, whether historical or contemporary, he would love to dine with. Gates noted his privilege in encountering “incredible people” and mentioned several prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ratan Tata, Raj Bhan (also known as Maharaj Kishan Bhan), and the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Insight into Influential Leaders
Gates expressed appreciation for the time spent with the Prime Minister, stating, “I have the opportunity to engage with him and gain insight into his vision for India, particularly in relation to the ambitious goals set for 2047.” He emphasised the alignment of various efforts to realise these goals.
He also praised Raj Bhan, mentioning his significant contributions as the creator of the Department of Biotechnology. Gates further reflected on the intriguing life of Ramanujan, saying, “He was almost enigmatic due to the sheer brilliance he exhibited in mathematics, which makes me wish I could have met him.”
Collaboration with Philanthropists and Innovators
Furthermore, Gates highlighted his collaborations with Ratan Tata and numerous other philanthropists and innovators in India. He talked about the enriching experiences with entrepreneurs who operate small-scale businesses, many of whom are integrating artificial intelligence into healthcare, covering both profit-driven and non-profit initiatives.
Gates concluded by expressing the difficulty in choosing only a few individuals, emphasising, “There exists an abundance of exceptional talent that makes it hard for me to select just three.” He elaborated on various themes, including India’s burgeoning entrepreneurship ecosystem, his guiding principles, international funding scenarios, scientific challenges, technology advancements, artificial intelligence, potential future pandemics, and his work ethic.
